Caprock Canyons State Park RV & Campground Guide


Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway is located between Amarillo, Texas, to the north and Lubbock, Texas, to the south. At 64 miles, the Caprock Canyons Trailway is the longest recreational corridor in this region of the U.S. The trail runs along the prior right-of-way of the "Burlington," which originally connected Chicago, the Twin Cities and St. Louis with Cheyenne, Denver and Dallas. This section of railroad was acquired by the Texas State Parks System and was formed into the Trailway in 1993. Inside the park itself, there are herds of bison, canyons, badlands and 90 miles of trails, including the Trailway.

The Lubbock KOA is a little north of Lubbock and is near many popular attractions, including the Lubbock Lake Landmark, the Buddy Holly Center and the National Ranching Heritage Center. Caprock Canyons State Park

Inside Caprock Canyons State Park

The main feature of the park is the Trailway, which is open for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. It runs between the South Plains at the top of the Caprock Escarpment at the west end of the trail to Estelline in the Red River Valley at the eastern end of the trail. It traverses three counties, runs through the Clarity Railway Tunnel and crosses 46 bridges. The Clarity Tunnel is the summer home of a large colony of Mexican free-tailed bats. While in the park, you can also fish, swim, and boat in the no-wake Lake Theo, which is a 120-acre lake stocked with many varieties of fish. There are even Junior Ranger activities for the kids that allow them to earn badges.

Outside Caprock Canyons State Park

Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway is located in the central part of the Texas Panhandle, near Amarillo and Lubbock. There are many sites to see and experience here, and when you are ready to leave the park, you can sightsee, dine out and shop in these nearby cities.


Bison Cafe

This hamburger joint offers unique and varied burgers and sandwiches. Some favorite burgers are the raspberry chicken burger and the mexi burger. They are open for lunch and dinner but closed on Mondays.

Here, you'll find home cooking in a diner setting. Their breakfast items are tasty and large, and they have daily lunch specials and Friday pizza nights. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

How to Get to
Caprock Canyons State Park

Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway is located in the town of Quitaque on FM 1065. The park sits 3.5 miles north of Highway 86. The roads into the park and inside the park have paved surfaces.

Entering Caprock Canyons State Park

The park is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Passes can be reserved online or through the customer service office.

Caprock Canyons State Park Per adult : $5.0

Entry is free for children 12 and under.

Texas is a large state, and you can literally spend days and weeks touring the area.
