Caprock Canyons State Park is located in Northwestern Texas and is situated between Lubbock to the south and Amarillo to the north. It is close to historic Route 66 and is near major thoroughfares traveling west to Albuquerque, Phoenix, the Grand Canyon and California. Caprock Canyons is a popular state park to visit and is home to interesting canyons, gullies, rocky formations and cliffs. The weather is hot and dry in the summer but can have cool evenings. The winters are fairly cold but not extremely so.

Caprock Canyons State Park

Inside Caprock Canyons State Park

Caprock Canyons State Park is host to a wide variety of wildlife, including a Texas bison herd. There are bats, eagles, prairie dogs, and many varieties of birds. Theo Lake offers plenty of fishing, swimming, and no-wake boating activities. You will appreciate the 90 miles of hiking trails that range in length and difficulty. The easy Mesa Trail is only 1 mile, and the Haynes Ridge Overlook Trail is a moderate 6.3-mile hike that rewards you with a gorgeous waterfall. You can ride horses around the park and even camp at equestrian campsites that have corrals.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

This state park is a popular destination near Amarillo that features lots of hiking trails and water activities. The park is home to the second-largest canyon in the U.S., and it has rim trails and interior trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding.

Route 66 District Amarillo

The original Route 66 is showcased in a 1-mile section of road featuring many historic buildings and quirky shops in Amarillo. There are also countless diners and periodic musical events.

Amarillo Botanical Gardens

How to Get to
Caprock Canyons State Park

Caprock Canyons State Park is located on FM 1065 and is 3.5 miles north of State Highway 86 in Quitaque. From Highway 86 in Quitaque, turn right (north) onto FM 1065.
