Point Lookout State Park RV & Campground Guide

Point Lookout State Park

occupies 1,079 acres at the peninsula's tip, which was formed by the confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River. The peaceful atmosphere that marks the area today belies the area's troubled history. Point Lookout got its name for its role in the War of 1812 when the local militia used it to watch the British fleet's actions. During the Civil War, the peninsula was used as a Prisoner of War camp by the Union to retain captured Confederate personnel. Today, the tip of the peninsula is enjoyed by many visitors for its peaceful beaches and mild climate. The closest community is the small town of Scotland, MD, but Alexandria, VA, which sits 71 miles northwest, is the nearest metropolitan area.
