Located northeast of Redding on the eastern edge of the Cascade Range, between Mount Lassen and Mount Shasta, McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park is on Lake Road a short distance from Highway 89. The nearest cities are Redding and Red Bluff, CA. On sunny days, the mist above the center of blue water at the base of the falls reveals an array of rainbow colors. The park has a variety of wildlife in the air, on the ground and in the water; some animals you may see are black bears, deer, foxes, and red-tailed hawks.

Inside McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park
McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park's centerpiece is the 129-foot Burney Falls, which is the biggest waterfall in the state. Hike or bike through the Burney Creek Trail and smell the incense cedars, oak trees, Douglas firs and ponderosa pines as you approach the falls. Burney Creek flows through the park and is the ideal place to go kayaking, canoeing and fishing; the creek flows over a 100-foot cliff before joining Lake Britten, so be careful. Anglers have been known to catch crappie, bass, bluegill and Lake Britton's trout in the creek.

Subway Cave Lava Tubes
The trailhead is one-quarter mile north of the junction of State Routes 89 and 44. The Subway Cave Lava Tubes feature a self-guided tour that is one-third of a mile long with the floor being rough and sharp, so be sure to wear shoes with thick soles. The cave is completely dark and remains cool at around 46 degrees Fahrenheit, so bring a flashlight and dress warmly.
McCloud River's Three Waterfalls
The McCloud River Canyon beautifully displays Mount Shasta's multiple layers of basalt lava rock and volcanic mud flow. Even though all three waterfalls along this section of the McCloud River have their own parking lot, it is well worth starting at the lower falls and hiking through the wilderness and scenic beauty of this area. The elevation begins at 300 feet and maximizes an elevation gain of 3,600 feet. The trail has a relatively easy to moderate difficulty with a round trip of about 4 miles.
Hat Creek Park
Hat Creek Park has beautiful, picturesque scenery with pine trees spread throughout the area. It's a peaceful place to go swimming, fishing or kayaking. There are also a variety of bird species here that you can observe.
How to Get to
McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park
The state park is northeast of Redding, approximately 6 miles north of the intersection of Highway 299 and Highway 89 east of Burney. From Highway 299, follow Highway 89 north for about 6 miles and then turn left onto Lake Road. The park will be on the right. All the roads leading up to the state park are paved with very few turns and are wide enough for RV travel.
