Explore Wheeling, West Virginia in an RVshare RV Rental

The area of Wheeling, West Virginia, was originally settled by Native Americans thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans in North America. Specifically, the Iroquois tribe was known to reside in Wheeling during the 17th century. Then, a European family with the last name Zane marked part of the present-day city's area, afterward naming the new town Zanesburg. In 1795, the area was divided into town lots and renamed Wheeling.

Downtown Wheeling today is perhaps most known for being the original location of Fort Henry during the American Revolutionary War. Fort Henry, named after revolutionary Patrick Henry, was first known as Fort Fincastle and was the site of the two revolutionary battles of Fort Henry. After the end of the war, the fort was mostly dismantled, and some remainders of the fort were also taken down around 1808, so there are no remnants of the historic site in downtown Wheeling today.

During the American Civil War, Wheeling was known as a hub for abolitionist meetings and conventions. During the height of the Civil War, West Virginia seceded from Virginia in order to become a part of the Union, and Wheeling was named the first capital of West Virginia. German immigrants in Wheeling created some of the most prominent anti-slavery groups in the entire area, and these immigrants established the First West Virginia Artillery, considered the very first group of men from West Virginia to oppose the Confederacy.

Today, there are a couple of buildings and monuments that you can visit to see the history of Wheeling. One such location is the West Virginia Independence Hall, a building from the 19th century that served as West Virginia's constitutional convention center after the state was admitted into the Union. Another great location to check out is the Centre Market, a market house that was built in 1853 and has been continued to be used as a center for local shops and restaurants.
