Houston, Texas

If you want to visit sizzling southern Texas, consider getting a Houston RV rental. Houston is situated 162 miles southeast of Austin and 57 miles north of the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. It’s also an exciting city in its own right, making it a great starting point for a Texas road trip.

Before you embark on your excursion, it's wise to do a little preparation. The first step is to decide the right type of recreational vehicle to rent before you search listings on RVshare and more importantly, how much will it cost you to rent an RV in Houston?

If you own a truck or SUV you plan to drive, you might want to look in to a camper trailer. These RV rentals in Houston are often large enough to fit six or more travelers. However, it's important to remember that a passenger car likely won’t have the capacity to tow a trailer. An exception would be a pop-up camper rental in Houston. These ultralight trailers can expand, or "pop up," once you are parked.

If you prefer not to tow, there are a variety of motorhomes and camper vans to meet your needs. Motorhome classifications include Class A, B, and C and RVshare has plenty of Houston RV rentals in each category.

Class A units are the tour bus-style motorhomes that are the most luxurious, and they can accommodate up to eight adults. The interiors often rival luxury homes, down to the restroom fittings. With an average length of 33 feet, these top-of-the-line camper rentals in Houston allow you to travel in style. You can rent a Class A motorhome in Houston for anywhere from $120 per night to $550 per night, but the average price to rent a Class A is around $225 a night. However, you get a discount the longer you rent, so the price drops to $207 a night if you rent for a full week, and $166 a night if you rent for a month.

Class B motorhomes are camper vans. They’re smaller; however, they still have a comfortable level of amenities. Most Class B motorhome rentals in Houston are around 20 feet long. This is enough room to sleep between two and four people. Class B motorhome rental prices range from $143-450 per night, but on average you can expect to pay around $215. A weekly discount would drop the price to $187 a night, and with a monthly discount, you’d pay $164.50 per night.

If your adventures will keep you away from the RV most of the day, a Class C motorhome may be what you’re looking for. The middle ground between Class A and B, these RVs are built on the chassis of full-size passenger trucks. For those who want good maneuverability with plenty of space, the Class C may be the best option. You can rent a Class C for between $165-410 per night, but on average expect to spend about $239 a night. With the discount, that’s $228.50 a night for a week, and $160 a night for a month.

Discover Houston in an RV

Houston is a vibrant, growing city, and it’s also a great place to start a Texas vacation because it’s near a lot of the state’s attractions. From national parks to pro sports to world-class entertainment, Houston and the surrounding areas have something for everyone.

US National & State Parks

Texas is home to two national parks - Guadalupe Mountains and Big Bend. Although both are quite a drive from Houston, they would make great destinations with plenty of stops in between to see the sites and cities of Texas.

Texas also has a whole host of state parks. Brazos Bend State Park is a beautiful nature area (that even has alligators!) just 45 minutes from Houston. Galveston Island State Park is about 60 miles from Houston, and is popular for its boardwalks and beaches. Village Creek State Park is about 100 miles from Houston and offers access to a paddling trail, great fishing, and trails for hiking and biking along with other activities.

RV Parks & Campgrounds

One of the best parts of going on an RV road trip is having the opportunity to visit all the fantastic campgrounds. There are plenty of great campgrounds in the area for Houston RV rentals. Advanced RV Resort is a great option if you’re staying in Houston. You’ll be close to both NRG Park and Minute Maid Park. Several nearby shopping malls provide ample opportunities to browse and pick up a souvenir from your trip. You can also cool off in the campground pool or relax in the hot tub after a day of activities.

All Star RV Resort is another great option that offers a fitness center, a pool, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, a dump station, and a rec room. The campground is also pet friendly.

Tourist Attractions

There is no shortage of attractions to see and explore in Houston. The Space Center Houston (go ahead and say it - “Houston, we have a problem”) has more than 400 things to do, and will delight dreamers young and old as they consider the vast magnitude of space. Check out Houston’s Street Art; there are many murals done by the artist known as Gonzo247 and a few by COPE2. Be sure to also shop all the vintage stores along 19th Street in the Heights. From haute couture to quirky household items, you can find it all on 19th Street. The beaches of Galveston are also not far away - head there for a day and take a walk on the boardwalk or stick your toes in the sand.

Houston is also home to many events that attract both native Texans and visitors from across the country. The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is the biggest rodeo in the world and a popular event each year, and the AIA Sandcastle Competition in Galveston each summer showcases an impressive array of talent building fanciful creations out of sand.

Sports and Entertainment

Houston is home to several major sports teams, such as the MLB's Astros, NFL's Texans, and the NBA's Rockets. If you are the more adventurous type, iFly Indoor Skydiving will get your heart pumping, and Battlefield Houston will give you plenty of memories playing laser tag. Art aficionados will love the Museum of Fine Art and Houston’s many art galleries.

Dump Stations

If you're going on a long road trip, it's important to keep your RV sanitary. Thankfully, there are more than 10 dump stations in the Houston area. Houston Leisure RV Resort in Highlands, TX, is open year-round and offers potable and non-potable water. Love’s - Travel Stops and Country Stores, which has locations throughout Houston, also offers dump stations to RVers. Riverbend RV Park in Richmond, TX, is open year-round, offers potable and non-potable water, and charges a small fee for dump station services. These Houston RV campgrounds also offer dump stations if you’re staying at their facilities.

Highways & Airports near Houston

There are myriad roads in and out of Houston. Interstate 10 runs east and west through the heart of the city. Interstate 45 stops in Houston, leading north. Meanwhile, Interstate 610 encircles the city. Traffic runs the normal patterns, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Since Houston is the 4th largest city in the United States, it has several airports as well, allowing easy access to the city, or from the city to places around the world. The George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) offers flights to five continents and has 700 departures per day. The William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) is served by four airlines and also offers flights around the world. It’s a big Southwest Airlines hub.
