Our Lady of the Rockies

Overlooking the city of Butte, Our lady of the Rockies is a 90 ft. statue that sits atop the continental divide. It is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, in honor of honor women, especially mothers. The statue was the brainchild of local resident Bob O'Bill, who made a promise to the Blessed Mother that he will build a statue in her image if his wife gets cured from cancer.  Instead of building a 5 ft. statue when his wife recovered, his plans changed and his initial vision turned into a 90 ft. statue. Using donated materials and a team of volunteers, this majestic landmark was constructed and finished in six years.  Today, it is one of the most visited man-made landmarks in the state.

Granite Mountain Memorial Overlook

The Granite Mountain Memorial Overlook was established to honor the miners who lost their lives in a disastrous fire that occurred in one of the mines in June 8, 1917. It serves as a reminder to the locals and travelers the sacrifices made by the earliest residents of the town. The open-air plaza is provides a panoramic view of the entire summit valley, the continental divide, and the surface of numerous mining operations.  An audio kiosk and informative plaques including excerpts from letters written by the miners trapped in the fire will move you to tears.
