Although at the onset the city was named Smith’s Landing, it was renamed Antioch after the biblical city of Antioch. Known as the “Gateway to the Delta”, the city is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River and it is fast developing into a residential community with land remaining plentiful and very affordable in comparison to the other cities located in the Bay Area. A 6,000-acre park under the administration of the East Bay Regional Park District, the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is a great place to start your visit. It is approximately five miles from Antioch and located north of Mount Diablo. It showcases relics of 5 ghost towns, former coalmines and sand mines, and 60 miles of trails. It has two visitor centers, the Sidney Flat Visitor Center which contains displays of photographs and artifacts from the 1800s and early 1900s, and the Greathouse Visitor Center situated in an underground chamber which was excavated in the 1920s and contains, photographs, displays, videos, and artifacts depicting the park’s sand and coal mining eras. It is a great park for picnicking and hiking. You can also take a Hazel-Atlas Mine Tour, which is on a first come, first saved basis.
Located right in the heart of the city, the El Campanil Theatre is one of the most important landmarks in Antioch. The theatre opened its doors to the public in 1928 and was owned and operated by the Stamm family until 2003. The first phase of its rehabilitation was completed in 2004 and has since been used for a wide variety of entertainment. The dressing rooms of the theatre is adorned by hundreds of autographs that date back to the theater’s opening and its auditorium still has its Moorish chandeliers, wall sconces and original ornate paintings. If you are visiting the city during the summer season, you can cool off at the Prewitt Family Water Park, a city-operated family friendly park located just a few minutes from the heart of the Antioch. The park features an adult pool, kiddie pool, toddler pool, lap pool, activity pool and waterslides. You can spend the whole day in the water park and enjoy its refreshing cool water, have some chow at the snack bar or enjoy picnicking with friends or family. The park season starts during the Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day.
The Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina is a great option if you want to be a few steps away from a waterfront and be just a few minutes away from the city of Antioch. It has a total of 50 spaces, 25 of which are shaded full hookup sites with patios and room for slideouts. A musical oriented even held every fall season at the historic Rivertown district of Antioch, the Delta Blues Festival showcases numerous Blues artists performing live. It is a one-day event, which draws in hundreds of Blues fans to Antioch annually. Aside from the live performances, the festival features crafts and food booths. The Delta Blues Festival is an alcohol-free event and everyone is encouraged to join the fun.
