The Maryland State Fair has been held annually for over 130 years. It's an exciting event that gives the people of Maryland and visitors an opportunity to come together and have a whole lot of fun. This 11-day festival is chock-full of the attractions you'd expect to see at any great state fair—exciting rides, tasty food, interesting exhibits, live performances, and much more.

ACTIVITIES & ENTERTAINMENT

This year's state fair will be a festive event with an abundance of attractions and food vendors.

If you like rides, you'll be pleased to know that the fair's midway has got plenty of them. You'll find everything from your standard Ferris wheel and carousels to teacups and swings. There's also the adventure-filled Pirate Island, Crazy Chopper, Rocking Tug, and many more exciting rides.

Last year, the midway added a new and exciting ride to its inventory, the Space Port. It goes high up into the air to perform its tricks and thrill its riders. Also new last year was a Circus Train that took fairgoers on a fun ride around the fairgrounds.

As far as entertainment and other activities are concerned, you'll get your choice of free and paid options. While the 2020 lineup has yet to be announced, some of last year's entertainment options may return. The 2019 lineup included the following:

• Raging Bull Entertainment: Raging Bull lives up to its name—it's a mechanical bull you can ride for as long as you're able. Word is it can buck quite a bit.

• Jarrett Lembach Karaoke: If you're not too shy, show off your singing and mimicking skills at this popular karaoke event.

• MD Holstein Futurity: This event is a state fair tradition. It highlights and honors the best of the best in the dairy industry.

• Miss Maryland Agriculture Contest: Watch as young women from Maryland's 23 counties compete for the right to be called Miss Maryland Agriculture 2020.

• Live Thoroughbred Horse Racing: You can enjoy the excitement of live racing as thoroughbreds thunder around the grandstand's track.

LOCATION

For 2020, the Maryland State Fair will start on August 28 and wrap up on September 7. The festival takes place at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium. This community is in the outer rim of the Greater Baltimore area, about 14 miles north of Charm City's downtown district. The fairgrounds address is:

2200 York Road

Lutherville-Timonium MD, 21093

RVING AT THE EVENT

There are no special accommodations made for RVers at the Maryland State Fair. No camping is allowed anywhere at the fairgrounds. Since the closest campgrounds in the area are not within walking distance to the state fair, be prepared to drive to the event or take public transportation.

WHERE TO STAY

There are plenty of great RV parks in the Greater Baltimore area. While most aren't near the fairgrounds, several are within an hour's drive. If you head east about 20 miles, you'll find Patapsco Valley State Park, which is relatively inexpensive and has electricity at Hollofield Campground within its borders.

You can also choose to stay at one of the many hotels near the fairgrounds. Check out the Holiday Inn, Extended Stay America, or Hampton Inn and Suites, which are all just north of the fairgrounds.

HOW TO GET THERE

Getting to the Maryland State Fairgrounds is not difficult at all, especially with all the signage you'll encounter once you get close to the venue. Just head to the intersection of York and Timonium roads, and you're there.

If you're coming from Interstate 83 North, get off at Exit 17 and take Padonia Road to York Road. Then, take York south to the fairgrounds.

If you're coming from Interstate 83 South, you'll be getting off at Exit 18 onto York Road, which will take you east to the fairgrounds entrance.

PARKING

Parking at the Maryland State Fairgrounds is available on a first-come, first-served basis and costs $10. Because parking is limited, you should plan on parking your rig somewhere else. The organizers of the state fair encourage attendees to use public transportation, such as the Light RailLink, which will take you straight to the grounds. Uber and Lyft are also available to get you to and from the grounds. Ride-share drivers will drop off and pick up at the Deerco Road Park and Ride lot, which is another place you can also find parking. Whether you park there or get dropped off, you can be at the fairgrounds after a short 1.2-mile walk.

TICKETS & PRICING

Admission to the fair costs $10 for adults under the age of 62. Those adults 62 years or older pay $8. Children between the ages of 6 and 11 only pay $5, and kids 5 and under get in for free.

While your paid admission will get you into some shows, rides are individually priced. Also, kids 3 and older need tickets for entertainment taking place on the racetrack field.

For active military and first responders, entrance is free with a valid and active ID.

WRAP UP

By taking an RV to the Maryland State Fair, you'll have your own home on wheels to enjoy at the end of an exciting day. When you're inside the fairgrounds, please take plenty of pictures and send some of them to RVshare at memories@rvshare.com. Your photos could be posted on RVshare's blog and social media.
